Millennium Falcon Lands in Orlando for Star Wars Convention

While many are familiar with the many comic conventions all over America, with fans dressed as their favourite characters from a whole range of shows and films. Yet there are also many series or franchise specific conventions dedicated to a particular theme.

Star Trek cons are fairly ubiquitous, well documented in the film 'Trekkies', showing joyous enthusiasm and eccentricities of the most committed fans. Less known outside the realms of committed fans are the star wars celebrations.

In the 33 years since Star Wars first burst on to the pop culture scene, there have been only five celebrations, yet they prove to be much less rustic than the Star Trek conventions through their official involvement with Lucasfilm.

Last week Star Wars Celebration V rolled in to town in Orlando Florida, fans flocked in their droves to the scorching Florida heat. Hotels were full out all Orlando vacation rentals were booked out as devotees brought their whole families along.

This was by no means just any celebration though, the event marked the30th anniversary, hailed by most as the best of the Star Wars series. By all means those in attendance were in for a treat, the 'Main Event' for many may have played as a dream, from which they had to keep pinching themselves to make sure they were actually awake.

In a crowded auditorium George Lucas walked on to the stage to cacophony of thunderous applause, where he was joined by John Stewart, yes, the host of the Daily Show. For over an hour the two bantered back and forth with wit, charm and a good degree of nerdiness.

Stewart turned out to be quite the Star Wars authority, asking in-depth questions that showed he had been paying attention. "was it [emperor] Palpatine that actually killed Darth Plagueis in his sleep?" the talk show host asked. "It was insinuated, but was Palpatine making it up?"

Following this came surprise after surprise with little comic touches from Lucas, before big revelations from Lucas and a rare treat for all fans (as if a post credits sequence). When Stewart asked Lucas of Obi-Wan Kenobi's home planet Lucas jokingly replied 'planet Stewjon', before R2 D2 rolled on to stage, presenting the host with his very own John Stewart as a Stormtrooper figurine.

But next came Lucas's big anouncement. Firstly that the films were all set to be given deluxe Blu-ray releases next year. Then he brought on to stage Mark Hammel (yep, Luke Skywalker), to introduce a much fabled 'lost' scene in which Luke Skywalker constructs his lightsabre in a cave in Tattooine. The crowd went completely nuts, as if they had found some place in Star Wars nerd history.

Then with fans minds already overloading, Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher, waltzed on the stage and spoke about the Jabba Porn she wanted to make (No, I'm really not making this up).

Celebration VI will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Return of The Jedi, and will take place in Utah. I imagine most fans have booked their tickets already.
